Three Restaurant Chains Worth the Money

Whether you live in Austin or come for a visit, do you scope out the foodie blogs and plan your meals around the latest faves? Me, too. Recently, however, I found myself thinking about how nice it is to enjoy a traditional dinner in Austin at one of our national restaurant chains. There's a lot of competition around here, but these three places have determined to stay on top. They can definitely be a little pricey, but with consistent menus, stellar service, and desserts that wow, I believe these nationally known establishments

Solving the Mystery at Hillside Farmacy

Ranking ahead of places like St. Louis, Houston and New Orleans in Zagat's list of 30 most exciting food cities is the very one in which Hillside Farmacy has made its unique home. Well, actually, it's not the restaurant's home that is so unique. It's more the restaurant itself.  First, there's the play on the word. It intrigues people, you know. Is it a pharmacy that sells aspirin and artichokes, or is it a restaurant that serves organic salads and stocks its shelves with over-the-counter cold remedies?  Funny you should ask.

A Carefree New Place to Eat – Caroline on Congress Avenue

If you've been reading along with me on this intentionally-adventurous journey, you know that I dearly LOVE all things Congress Avenue. Everybody Needs a Favorite Burger

Everybody needs a favorite burger. In Amarillo, we had a favorite burger - or two. One family spot we frequented had a counter where you placed your order and they wrote down your name. After you found your table, you patiently waited until the familiar words rang out on the sound system for all the patrons to hear: Brenda, YOUR BUNS ARE UP. All the middleschoolers in our pack thought that was great fun. In Austin, when it's time for a burger (and somehow, we all just know when it's time, don't we?), we make a mad dash to the

Chicken and Waffles at Forthright

Living the urban lifestyle in downtown Austin is an emptynester's dream. The moon is bright in the morning sky, and the pool lights reflect on the leaves of every cherished tree surrounding it. Whenever we get ready for a big weekend breakfast after a long walk around Lady Bird Lake, there are a jillion places in walking distance. However, there's only one with this kind of chicken and waffles. It's called Forthright. With a Name Like Forthright, It's Gotta be Good At the previous law firm where I worked, we had a white board.

Father’s Day Menu

The Plan Here's the thing.  Overfiftyers are free in so many ways.  Free to stay home for dinner every night if they want to, and free to go out if they don't.  Granted, eating out for two is way cheaper than taking a family of five. However, it is still more expensive to eat out, even for the two of us, so we eat at home a lot...but we keep it a little simpler. Before we get to the Father's Day Menu itself, let's chat about the Over Fifty kitchen in general. The Rotation Breakfast for supper is on the rotation at least once
