Father’s Day Gift Guide

What are you getting your dad for Father’s Day?  Have you been thinking about it for a while? Maybe you’ve already asked Dad what he’d like to have this year. That certainly makes things easy! However, if the father or father figure in your life is a little more like mine, i.e., “I really don’t need anything,” then maybe you can find something in my Father’s Day Gift Guide that he needs (or wants) more than he really knew.

Sock of the Month Club
Since 2012, when yet another successful Austin start-up started up, Sock of the Month Club has increasingly been putting their best foot forward and rising to the top in the world of stylish socks. Gone are the days when the only crazy socks we might see on our dads’ feet were knitted with little evergreen Christmas trees. These are colorful, handsome and trendy, but also soft and well crafted.  People who wear crazy socks are known to be spotted in crowds and singled out as more brilliant, creative and successful – which means, of course, that our dads – who have always stood in the category of brilliant – need some.

Bacon of the Month Club from Amazing Clubs
Dads love their bacon. If you really want to see his eyes light up and a smile spread across the face of your beloved Pop, just tell him to keep the skillet hot and watch for the mailman. Bacon is headed his way. Like TWELVE MONTHS IN A ROW. He can put it on a burger, mix it into some chocolate chip cookie dough, sprinkle bits of it on a pizza, or bake it with a glaze like we do at our house. Of course, he can always just fry a couple of slices to enjoy with his world-famous scrambled eggs.

Man Crates
Picture this.  Your favorite dad is sitting in his favorite chair watching his favorite team when, unexpectedly, he hears the package delivery truck turn a hard right and screech to a stop out on the driveway. Huh, he thinks to himself. Wonder what she ordered now, he assumes. Only this time, it’s not for her. It most definitely is just for him. See ya’, sir, says the delivery guy. Oh, and you’re gonna need a crowbar to open that thing. Ohhhhh, yeeeeahhhh. Good ol’ Dad thinks he has died and gone to Father’s Day heaven.

Unlimited Car Washes
I like a clean car, but it seems to me that men think about this more often than we women do. In general, our dads, our brothers, our husbands and our sons like their cars c-l-e-a-n. Wouldn’t it be thoughtful to give a month or two of unlimited trips through the car wash? I just remembered that Mike and I used to unroll the green water hose every Saturday and wash our cars together. One of the treasures that he brought into our blessed union (and garage) was an old metal minnow bucket with the perfect handle (I guess) for carrying it (full of suds) from tire to tire and bumper to bumper. We did have a lot of fun together, getting all the towels dirty, discussing life over our matching white vinyl hoods. But that was then and this is now. Unlimited car washes would definitely be easier. We can discuss life over coffee at Starbucks.

Stitch Fix for Men
Does your dad like to shop, or would he rather someone do it for him? A lot of men like it – and a lot of men loathe it. I really have to bribe the sweet man who married me to get him to go shopping for himself. He’ll do it – as long as he truly needs something – and if there’s a chance for barbeque afterwards. Stitch Fix for Men could be a really good thing if the dad in your life is a reluctant shopper. Fashion blogger, Cyndi Spivey, wrote about her husband’s Stitch Fix experience here, which looks to have worked out pretty well. Although Stitch Fix didn’t originate here, many of their stylists do operate out of office space in downtown Austin. I tried Stitch Fix for myself when we first moved here, and had a great experience. Just sign up, fill out a profile of what Dad likes, and in a few short days, a box will arrive from a savvy shopper who did all the work. The return process is just as easy – unless, of course, he actually keeps it all!
